In today’s fast paced world, sometimes we don’t have the time or willingness to go all out on a detox routine. So if you’re looking for something simple, that yields both fast and long term benefits, here are 3 ways Ayurveda can help.
1. Oil Pulling
Many of you have heard about this trend, but what you may not know is how to do it correctly in order to get the maximum benefit. Oil pulling originated from Ayurveda over 5,000 years ago. Mostly what you’ll find online about it is that it’s popular to use coconut oil, but actually, organic sesame oil is what you want to use. Sesame oil, according to the ancient texts, is able to pull toxins from the body much more efficiently than other oils. Along with reducing and eliminating cavities, gum disease, tartar and plaque build up, many people also find their allergies become much more manageable, and their thinking much clearer among other benefits. All you do is swish around anywhere from 2 teaspoons up to 1 Tablespoon of organic sesame oil in your mouth for a minimum of 1 minute, working your way up to 5 or 10 minutes if you can. You do this BEFORE you brush your teeth, and I find that doing it while I’m in the shower helps me be able to do it for longer periods of time without thinking I’m going to gag on oil.
2. Drink HOT Water Plain Every Morning
This is another simple yet powerful detoxing practice. Before you eat or drink anything else, drink 1 cup of hot water PLAIN. Don’t add lemon to it, as over time this can leach electrolytes from the body, but just drink it plain. This helps to flush toxins from the body, stimulate digestion and elimination processes and over time you will notice you feel more alert, clear minded and your skin will show the results of detoxing by reducing and eliminating acne, eczema or other signs of inflammation. Used along with a clean, organic, alkaline diet, the results are even more noticeable.
3. Sip on Spice Water Throughout The Day
This is my own personal favorite and an extremely effective one I use in my own practice with my clients to help with anything from inflammation to weight loss. All you do is boil water on the stove (no microwave) and add a pinch of organic ground cinnamon, organic ground ginger and 1-2 whole organic cloves. Bring to a boil, put in a thermos and sip throughout the day. This ancient practice from Ayurveda penetrates all the “dhatus” (tissues) in the body to eliminate inflammation, flush toxins from all layers of the body as well as aid in healing the digestive system. In addition to the many benefits of ginger and cinnamon, you will also be helping to boost your immune system, relieve constipation, and support the natural anti-aging processes in the body. Many people notice their joints stop cracking as “Ama” (toxins) are flushed from the body, as well as relief from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, and Rheumatoid Arthritis since all of these are simply symptoms of a build up of toxins in the body.
